South African rand gains as oil prices fall on U.S.-Iran mediation hopes

The South African rand firmed in early trade on Tuesday as global markets assessed mixed developments in the U.S.-Iran conflict, ‌with oil prices easing on reports of mediation efforts.

*At 0731 GMT the rand traded at 16.4449 against the dollar , about 0.5% up from its previous close.

*Economists polled by Reuters expect annual inflation to have accelerated to 4.7% in June from 4.5% in May. They also forecast the central bank will raise its key interest rate by 25 basis points to 7.25%.

*South Africa's benchmark 2035 government bond was firmer in early deals, as the yield fell 3.5 basis points to 8.525%. (Reuters, 2026-07-21)
